Mossat Burn, a critical tributary in the Donside Watershed, is home to various fish species, including brown trout and Atlantic salmon. In 2024, we will conduct electrofishing surveys to assess fish populations and gather essential data to inform conservation efforts, habitat restoration, and water quality management.
What is Electrofishing?
Electrofishing is a scientific method used to safely catch fish for research. An electrical current is passed through the water, temporarily stunning the fish, allowing researchers to capture, measure, and return them unharmed. This non-invasive technique is crucial for conducting accurate fish population surveys in rivers and burns.
Survey Findings
Initial findings suggest promising numbers of brown trout, but evidence of habitat degradation and limited species diversity highlight the need for increased conservation efforts to restore the ecological balance in Mossat Burn.
