Project Outline
- Objective: Identifying species diversity and population density, with a focus on key species like brown trout and Atlantic salmon.
- Location: Mossat Burn & Kindie Burn
- Start Date: 2024

The Goal
The Kindie Burn and Mossat Burn is a vital tributary in the Donside Watershed, home to a variety of fish species, including brown trout, Atlantic salmon, and other freshwater fauna. Electrofishing surveys are an essential tool in monitoring the health of fish populations and understanding the ecological state of the burn.
In this project, we aim to assess fish populations and gather data that will inform conservation efforts, habitat restoration, and water quality management in the catchment area.
What is electrofishing
Electrofishing is a scientific technique used to safely catch fish for research purposes. Using an electrical current passed through the water, fish are momentarily stunned, allowing researchers to capture them, take measurements, and then return them unharmed to the water. This method is non-invasive and crucial for conducting fish population surveys in rivers, streams, and burns.

Survey Findings
While initial surveys show promising populations of brown trout, signs of habitat degradation and limited fish diversity indicate more conservation efforts are needed to fully restore the ecological balance.
