Large Woody Structures

Creating sheltered areas and river obstructions to cool the river and slow the flow.

The Goal

The project aims to enhance the ecological and hydromorphic health of the River Don and its tributary, Mossat Burn, by introducing large wood structures (LWS) and porous log jams (PLJ). These structures will restore natural river processes, increase physical channel diversity, improve spawning habitats for salmonids, and strengthen climate resilience. By kick-starting natural processes, the project also supports sediment deposition, erosion control, and the future recruitment of large wood.

How Large wood structures Helps

The implementation of LWS will revitalize local river dynamics by improving habitat diversity, fostering fish populations, and promoting the natural evolution of the river channel. It will reduce flood risks by slowing water flow and stabilizing sediment, while the introduction of in-channel wood will provide thermal refuge for aquatic species. Long-term benefits include better ecological resilience and enhanced natural flood management, ensuring the river system is better equipped to handle the effects of climate change.
